Seasonal Celebrations

 Seasonal Celebrations

FUS celebrates the turning of the seasons. We celebrate the four main solar holidays of the year. The Summer and Winter Solstice are celebrated during the evening with a dinner, program, and merry-making.

The Spring and Fall Equinox are celebrated during the Sunday Assembly and with a festive meal on the Sunday that is closest to the holiday.

Join us for the celebrations!

Midwinter Revels Winter Solstice Celebration

Wednesday, December 21, 2011

Thanks to everyone who made the Winter Solstice Celebration possible!

We mark the longest night with family and friends with a festive dinner, pause to consider the wonder of the season with music, poetry and reflections and a rollicking Mummers' play, and end the evening with delicious desserts, folk dancing and a Yule Fire Ring.

 Welcome Yule!

Celebration of Lammas, Summer Assemby, Sunday, August 7, 2011

For anyone who is interested in exploring the works or Richard Wrangham further, Catching Fire: How Cooking Made Us Human is published by Basic Books/the Perseus Group, paperback ISBN: 978-0-465-02041-6.

As summer hits the half-way point, thoughts turn to harvesting the vegetables and grain growing since spring, and to baking bread.  But how did humans come to be bread-makers?  Primatologist and author Richard Wrangham suggests that we've been thinking about this question the wrong way, and argues that cooking itself made us human.  In recognition of Lammas, we look at this (r)evolutionary theory of human and social development and examine how cooking has shaped human community and defined who we are.  We'll share fresh-baked bread after the Assembly.
